What is motor trade insurance?

Motor trade insurance is specialist cover for those who buy, sell, or work on vehicles as part of their business. Also known as traders’ insurance, it protects you when driving, handling, or repairing customer or company vehicles.

A motor trade insurance policy usually combines road risks, liability and premises cover, and is tailored to the way your business trades.

Do I need motor trade insurance?

You need motor trade insurance if anyone in your business drives or works on customer or company-owned vehicles. However, only the following elements are legally required:

  • The minimum level of Road Risks cover if your team drives vehicles on the road
  • Employers’ liability cover if you employ staff

Anything outside of this is not a legal requirement, but usually highly recommended. When a customer leaves their vehicle in your care, their individual motor policy will no longer cover the vehicle, leaving you responsible and vulnerable. To keep you and your business protected, you need to have your own cover in place, which reflects how you trade.

What should I look for in motor trade insurance?

Here are some things we suggest prioritising when looking for cover:

  • A personalised traders’ insurance policy, built to suit your business
  • Flexibility so your cover can adapt as your business grows or changes
  • Coverage for all staff, including new hires
  • Transparency on what is and isn’t covered, plus the level of protection
  • An experienced, trusted team who specialise in motor trade insurance
  • Strong reviews from satisfied customers

We know you’ll be looking for the best motor trade insurance in the UK for your business. A good motor trade insurance policy is one that’s flexible, up-front above coverage and tailored to your business.

Our core motor trade insurance products

Motor trade insurance is usually built around three core cover types. Here’s how they work:

Let's get you covered

Who is Motor Trade Insurance for?

At Road Runner, we aim to cover all motor trades within the industry. Here are just some of the covers we offer:

Mobile Mechanic Insurance – For mechanics working roadside or at customers’ homes. Covering (yours and your customers’) vehicles, tools, liability, and more.
Auto-electrician Insurance – For traders who focus on diagnostic work, electrical repairs, and specialist equipment.
Part-time Motor Trade Insurance – All the features of a standard motor trade insurance policy, but on a part-time basis. So you only pay for the cover you need.
Exhaust and Tyre Fitter Insurance – For specialist workshops handling tyres, exhausts and other accessories.
Breakdown and Recovery Insurance – Cover for breakdown services, recovery transport, and roadside assistance.
Vehicle Repair and Car Servicing Insurance – Built for workshops carrying out maintenance, repairs, inspections, and MOT tests.
Car Valeting Insurance – Protection for valet services, detailing work, and customer vehicles in your care.

Is motor trade insurance the same as business car insurance?

No, they’re completely different types of cover, designed for different kinds of work.

Motor trade insurance: For people who buy, sell, repair, or handle customer vehicles (e.g. new or used car dealers, mechanics, MOT centres). It lets you drive vehicles you don’t own, such as customer cars or stock, without updating your insurer for every change.
Business car insurance: For those insuring their own personal car for work trips (e.g. visiting clients). It won’t cover you to drive, work on, or handle other people’s vehicles.

How does Motor Trade Insurance work with the MID?

As a motor trader, you’re legally required to keep the Motor Insurance Database (MID) up to date by recording every vehicle you own, use, or under your motor trade policy. Failing to update the MID can lead to fines, vehicle seizure, or prosecution.

With Road Runner, you get access to an online portal where you can quickly add or remove vehicles on your insurance policy, and those updates feed straight through to the MID. Meaning you only need to update the details once, helping you stay compliant without extra admin.

How to get cheaper Motor Trade Insurance

We know it can be tempting to search for the cheapest motor trade insurance policy. But it’s absolutely vital that you prioritise your quality of cover so you’re fully protected. Here are some money-saving tips when you’re looking to cut the cost of cover.

Shop around for the most reasonable quote – the same way you would for your home or personal motor vehicle insurance.
Pay for what you need – tailor your policy to include your fundamentals and avoid unnecessary extras.
Avoid ‘any vehicle’ policies if you work with standard vehicles – insurers may charge more for covering specialist vehicles, for example: HGVs, high-performance, or classic cars.
Think about upping your voluntary excess – this may decrease your overall premium. Although make sure it’s within your price range!
Increase security measures – including safe overnight storage of vehicles, equipment, and tools. Insurers might offer discounts.
Keep risk assessment and risk management programmes available, accessible and familiar to your drivers.
Only employ experienced drivers with clean driving records
Limit the number of drivers so that only essential staff are covered
Consider enforcing drivers to pay their own excesses to incentivise safe driving
Pay annually rather than monthly
Avoid modifications to vehicles
Try to build up a no claims bonus

  2. Those actively operating a motor trade business for profit or income
  3. Drivers who haven’t been disqualified from driving nor been convicted of driving without insurance
  4. Drivers with no criminal convictions, or spent time in a correctional facility under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, or who have any criminal convictions pending

Who can drive on a motor trade policy?

Insurance with Road Runner will cover:

  • Customers’ vehicles while they are your responsibility – but you can only use them for motor trade use

While your Road Risks insurance policy doesn’t define vehicles by a specific registration number, we still need you to tell us what vehicles you own – whether they’re for your own use or held for trade purposes. Don’t worry, as long as you’ve already told us the vehicles you work with, we don’t charge an additional premium per vehicle.

How does trade vehicle insurance work?

Trade vehicle insurance provides personalised cover for those operating in the motor trade. At Road Runner, we aim to build cover based on your business and its needs. We’ll usually build policies combining a mix of Road Risks insurance, liability cover, and premises insurance. There are also various optional add-ons to help reduce risk even further.

Can I drive any car on a motor trade insurance policy?

No, you can’t drive any car on a motor trade insurance policy. But the good news is that you can drive a wide range of vehicles that fall under your motor trade activities. These can include:

  • Vehicles connected to your business – such as work vehicles, customer cars, and stock
  • Your own personal car (if added to the motor trade policy)

Do I need motor trade insurance if I just fix cars at home?

Yes, you still need motor trade insurance if you work from home.

Home-based motor traders are treated the same as those operating from a commercial premises when it comes to insurance. If you repair, service, or handle customer vehicles in any capacity, you’ll need specialist cover to protect yourself, your customers’ vehicles and your business from financial risk.

Although, some parts of the cover will be legally required and others optional, depending on how you operate. For example, if you drive or move customers’ vehicles, you’ll need road risks insurance by law. If you employ staff, you’ll need employers’ liability insurance. And if customers visit your home, you may need public liability insurance.

Other covers are usually optional, but highly recommended.

Are there any limits on what vehicles can be covered?

Traders’ insurance covers most vehicles, but a Road Runner policy encompasses everything from motorbikes to motorhomes, and commercial vehicles to kit cars, as well as standard cars. Our cover list includes:

  • Standard cars and light commercial vehicles
  • Motorbikes, trikes, scooters, or mopeds
  • Sports and high-performance vehicles
  • Commercial vehicles (up to 7.5 tons, or a recovery vehicle up to 17.5 ton)

  • Classic, vintage, and veteran cars
  • Foreign vehicles and grey imports
  • Kit cars
  • Q plates
  • Modified vehicles
  • Agricultural plant and machinery
  • People carriers and minibuses (with up to 17 seats)

How do I show my insurer that I am a legitimate motor trader?

While there’s no standard document to prove to an insurer you’re a legitimate trader, Road Runner can help advise you on what documentation and evidence to produce. Make sure you have invoices, plus purchase and sales receipts up to date and categorised, which will help us build up your motor trader profile when engaging with possible insurers.

Where can I find your motor trade insurance policy documents?
